A Danish spring classic and two challenges in the Ardennes
On Saturday, Team Waoo completed the closest you will get to a Paris-Roubaix on Danish roads, namely the prestigious Grandprix Herning. With the approximately 30 kilometers on gravel pavées in total, the reference is on point.
It was a fast race from the first kilometer, and Team Waoo covered almost all breakaways all day. Especially Silas Clemmensen, Mathias Larsen, Jesper Schultz and Martin Mortensen showed great initiative, but the peloton managed to keep all breakaways within reach.
A select group including Martin Mortensen succeeded in building up a gap on the final laps in Herning but were caught on the final kilometers. The race thus ended in a bunch sprint where Rasmus Guldhammer took 4th place.
Team Waoo will race two UCI races in Denmark next weekend before turning towards Luxembourg for the stage race Flèche du Sud.
This week, Team Virtu Cycling finished their spring program with the two hilly classics in the Ardennes, La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. With a 15th place in Flèche Wallonne and a 20th place in Liège-Bastogne-Liège by respectively Rachel Neylan and Sofia Bertizzolo, the team did not make any top 10 placements this week.
Sport director Carmen Small expressed some disappointment on behalf of the team but was proud of their ability to work together: “We just have to acknowledge that in this terrain at the moment, there’s a select group of riders we could not match”.
All in all, it has been a successful spring season for Team Virtu Cycling, peaking with a win in Tour of Flanders. The team now turns their focus towards the Spanish stage race Emakumeen XXX. Bira, which is on the program for next month.
