Barbara Gaurischi sprints for 9th in Gent-Wevelgem

Team VIRTU Cycling earned another Women’s World Tour top 10, when Barbara Guarischi sprinted for 9th in the cobbled classic Gent-Wevelgem.

Sunday it was time for the 5th round of the Women’s World Tour, and Team VIRTU Cycling added some more points, when Barbara Guarischi finished in 9th place in a close sprint.

The Team VIRTU Cycling riders had managed to put themselves in a good position, when the peloton split in the crosswinds with 40 km to go. Both Barbara Guarischi, Christina Siggaard, Emilie Moberg and Kasia Pawlowska made it to the front split, that made it to the finish.

Here the winner was decided in a sprint, where Team VIRTU Cycling’s Italian showed a good performance finishing 9th.

“The big challenge was to get numbers in the end, and it was good because the girls fought their way back. Barbara and Kasia was in the front, and then Emilie and Christina fought their way back. It was great, and I was really pleased to see them there. They showed some good team spirit and a good team effort. It was some good racing today, and now I want more and more and more,” sports director Carmen Small said after the race.

There isn’t a long way from 9th place to a podium and a win, and Carmen Small believes, that the team are cabable of achieving even better results.

“In the end it is a sprint and anything can happen. We just need to figure out the last piece to finish it off, I believe they can make it to the podium in all of these races. Right now I’m just happy that the girls are riding together as a team, because it takes a team effort to get there to start with,” she says.

It was Alé-Cipollini’s Marta Bastianelli, that took the victory ahead of Jolien D’Hoore and Lisa Klein. Also in the front group Team VIRTU Cycling’s Emilie Moberg finished 15th, Kasia Pawlowska 19th and Christina Siggaard 32nd.
