Barbara Guarischi 5th and wins the sprinters jersey in the Race Melbourne Crit
A good team effort and a strong sprint secured Barbara Guarischi a top spot and the sprinters jersey in the Race Melbourne Crit.
Albert Park in Melbourne was Thursday the course for the Race Melbourne Crit, where the riders had to go 12 laps in the big park. Team VIRTU Cycling was riding well, and Barbara Guarischi secured a good result for the team as she won the sprinters jersey and finished 5th.
Already at the first intermediate sprint, the Italian sprinter had a good start when she made use of a good lead out.
“I rode the sprint perfectly. Kasia, Trine and Louise helped me, and we fought a little with the other teams. We started a little too early, and I was a little surprised that I won the sprint, but we did well, and the speed was good,” Barbara Guarischi says.
She also participated in the following intermediate sprint, but before the final sprint was side by side in points with number 2.
“I had to finish in front of her in the sprint, but it did not make sense to sprint just to be in front of her so we decided to ride for me. We tried to sit together as a team until last lap, and when the speed picked up we stayed in front,” Barbara Guarischi says. She finished in 5th place but defended her sprinters jersey.
“We found a position, but I was a bit too far back. Maybe if I had been closer to the front – I cannot say I would have won, but I think I could have been on the podium,” the Italian sprinter says.
Sports director Carmen Small was also very happy with her riders, even though the podium just slipped away.
“It was really good. We would have ridden the last sprint for Emilie but changed tactics to get Barbara in the sprinters jersey. The girls rode excellent today, they helped each other at the intermediates and in the final – it was really good to see. Now we are one step closer to the podium,” she says.
The Race Melbourne crit was won by Anette Edmonson in front of Giorgia Bronzini and Kendall Ryan. Next race for Team VIRTU Cycling is Saturday, where they are starting in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race
