Barbara Guarischi pockets fifth in Vårgarda Road Race
Team VIRTU Cycling Women soon pressured the field in this evening’s Vårgarda Road Race where the Danish World Tour squad were in the charge of the pace-making in the first half of the Swedish one-day race.
Numerous of snaky moves were launched from the field throughout the evening and when Anna van der Breggen initiated a bold one-woman-attack, it left the spectators with a hint of hope for a solo win. However, the peloton suddenly started to reel her in and in the final curve before the finish line, the experienced, Marianne Vos launched a stinging attack leaving the field hesitating a second and then, it was all over. Vos won the race ahead of Kirsten Wild and Lotta Lepistö, while VIRTU Cycling Women’s Barbara Guarischi took 5th place.
DS, Carmen Small says:
“The girls are doing a really good race tonight putting pressure on the field from the gun and working together as planned. Unfortunately, Christina Siggaard has a puncture with four laps to go, which cost her a lot of energy getting back to the peloton. However, Sara Penton was there in a split second for Barbara putting her in an excellent position for the sprint and Barbara did she could in very tough conditions and finished in a satisfying fifth position.”
Barbara Guarischi comments:
“It was probably the hardest race I have ever done. We did the gravel sections in one line and I found myself way back there as Carmen started fueling me with verbal energy through the radio and I got back up. Slowly and steadily. In the very finale, I had to go by my instincts as you really can’t think straight after 143 kilometers of tough racing and with cramps in both legs, I opened the sprint and closed my eyes hoping for the best. I’m content with this result and especially the help from my teammates”.
