Doris Schweizer flashed the VIRTU colors in Fleche Wallone
Team VIRTU Cycling Women were on fire from the sound of the gun in today´s Belgian one-day classic, Fleche Wallone over 118.5 kilometers. But eventually, Olympic Champion and Tour of Flanders-winner, Anna van Der Breggen took her fourth consecutive win.
Team VIRTU Cycling Women wanted to make their mark on the race and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad-winner, Christina Siggaard paved the way for her teammate by launching the first attack from the peloton. In a counter-move, Doris Schweizer eloped from the pack and built up a lead of one minute before a quartet of riders joined her.
However, the pack was never too far behind and with 40 kilometers to go, the breakaway was reeled in by a group of 40 riders and the fight was back on! A new front group was formed before the first climb of the demanding Mur de Huy and entering it for the final time with three kilometres remaining, the gap was down to merely 20 seconds. With 500 meters to go, the break was caught and Anna van der Breggen (Boels) launched a fierce attack and took her fourth consecutive win of the race – on her birthday.
Team VIRTU Cycling Women, hoped for a different finale:
“We wanted a more pro-active approach to the race as we don´t consider ourselves as contenders in an uphill sprint, so we decided to go early. Both Chris (Siggaard) an Doris (Schweizer) did what they could to execute the plan but the break was too small and the chasing pack too strong and it all ended an uphill showdown where Anna was in a league of her own”, concludes DS, Carmen Small.
