Emilie Moberg 6th on the final stage of Santos Women’s Tour Down Under

Team VIRTU Cycling got another good result on the final stage of Santos Women’s Tour Down Under, when Emilie Moberg sprinted to 6th place. Kasia Pawlowska was the team’s best rider in GC in 15th place.

Just 42 kilometers was scheduled on the final stage of Santos Women’s Tour Down Under. In the center of Adelaide the four-day-stage race had to be concluded with a criterium where Emilie Moberg again did a good effort and finished 6th in a sprint won by Chloe Hosking.

Team VIRTU Cycling had attempted to put the Norwegian profile up to the sprint as a crash halfway in the race sent Barbara Guarischi to the ground. The Italian rider returned got back on her bike, but the crash made the team tactics change.

” Barbara was supposed to do the final sprint and she got in a crash. She’s okay. She’s skinned up, but nothing major, but that not how you want to end the race obviously. Most girls would just say: I’m done – it’s the last day of the race. But there was no question about her wanting to finish. She is tough,” sports director at Team VIRTU Cycling, Carmen Small, says.

” We changed the tactics in the middle of the race. It was good, but we lack a bit of the top speed, because it’s our first race. Cipollini did a good job in their lead out, and we stayed well together, but then they lost each other a bit, when the speed got a bit high. But for sure that will come after some more races,” Carmen Small says.

For Team VIRTU Cycling, Santos Women’s Tour Down Under was the first race of the season. The team made their mark in several stages with top 10-finishes and hard attacks, but it didn’t lead to a victory that Carmen Small had hoped for. However, she is pleased with the way the team has ridden in its first race.

“They rode together well and rode as a unit, that is really nice to see. I think it’s a successful start to the year because we are already riding together instead of being individuals trying to finish a bike race. It’s a good starting point, and I think there are some good things coming,” Carmen Small says.

In the GC, Australian Amanda Spratt took his 2nd win in a row. Kasia Pawlowska was the best Team VIRTU Cycling rider as she finished 15th in overall.

Next race for Team VIRTU Cycling will be the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race on January 25th.
