Before the final stage in Istrian Spring Trophy Kasper Asgreen was sitting in 2nd place. Team VIRTU Cycling was therefore offensive on Sunday’s stage to get the young rider to step up on the podiums top spot.
Shortly before the big breakaway of the stage was picked up, Kasper Asgreen took off in an attack in a section with cross winds. However a fast peloton slowly but steadily gained from behind, and the attack was canceled before the stage ended in a sprint.
“I wanted us to something so I tried to get away, but the peloton just brought me back in. It was a difficult stage to do something, and it just ended in a sprint. I knew that the likelihood that I hit the right wheel in the sprint was small so I had to try from far our,” Kasper Asgreen says.
“I’m very happy for my stage win that I took it in an explosive final. I’ve worked during the winter to get better there, so I’m happy about that. I came to win the GC and failed so of course, I’m a bit disappointed, but overall, I’m happy with the race, “Kasper Asgreen says.
Latvian Emil Liepins won the last stage where Kasper Asgreen also was best Team VIRTU Cycling rider. Norwegian Krister The team from Team Coop won the race, but Team VIRTU Cycling’s Mikkel Honoré also finished in 4th place in the GC and the team also won the team’s classification.
