Marta Bastianelli sprints to victory in Sweden
“The team executed our plan perfectly,” says DS Carmen Small about yesterday’s race in Sweden, where Marta Bastianelli took her 3rd UCI WWT victory.
The riders were in for a tough race in PostNord UCI WWT Vårgårda yesterday. The peloton was facing a 145 km long race, with 8 gravel sections underway. Leaving the 3rd gravel sector, the peloton entered a 3,7 km long climb, where the pace was really high. 14 riders, including Marta Bastianelli, managed to break free from the peloton, and they quickly builded a gap of 45 seconds. The peloton kept the breakaway on a short leash, and they were caught with 60 km to go.
The final part of the race was affected by a lot of breakaway attempts, and a trio was captured just 1 km before the finish. The team set Marta Bastianelli up for the perfect sprint as she entered the final corner in second position.
Bastianelli and Marianne Vos (CCC – Liv) was head to head in the final meters, where Bastianelli was the strongest and could take the victory!
“It was our last one-day Women’s World Tour race, so it was super that the girls had a great race today. They raced as a team all day, helping each other. Sara made sure everybody was positioned well for the technical parts, and Anouska and Barbara helped Marta in the final kilometers. It’s not often things go as planned, but when they do, it’s amazing,” says a happy Carmen Small.
