Mieke Kröger hits the top 10 on stage 1 of Healthy Ageing Tour

Several of Team VIRTU Cycling’s riders showed themselves on the opening ITT of Healthy Ageing Tour, where Mieke Kröger finished in the top 10.

It was a short but hard opening stage in the Dutch stage race Healthy Ageing Tour, when the riders had to battle the clock in an 8-kilometer ITT.

Team VIRTU Cycling had multiple riders doing a great performance as Barbara Guarischi and Louise Norman Hansen finished 18th and 19th, but Mieke Kröger had the team’s best performance. She did the 8 kilometers in 11:01, that put her in 9th place.

“I’m actually really happy, I had hoped Mieke was a little bit faster, but it’s difficult, when hadn’t had that much training on the bike yet. With a little more time, she will definitely improve. All the girls showed a really good performance and gave a good effort, so it bodes well for the TTT. I was pleased by their performance today,” Carmen Small says.

The team’s youngest rider Louise Norman Hansen could have finished even better, but a slower rider and a car made her lose some time.

“A car almost hit Louise in a corner, where she lost a lot of time, and then she caught a rider in a bad corner. Both made her lose a lot time, and I think she would have finished higher, that would be more true to her performance today,” Carmen Small says.

On stage 2 of Healthy Ageing Tour the riders face 131 completely flat kilometers with both start and finish in Grootegast.

“It’s going be really windy, so the girls have to be ready. The biggest thing is to stay together and be at the front, and then we will see what happens. We need the numbers in the split and to be aware that there aren’t any big breaks without us in,” Carmen Small says.

The winner of stage 1 was Anna van der Breggen, who also took the overall lead.
