Trine Schmidt best Team VIRTU Cycling-rider in windy stage

The crosswinds ended up being a very decisive factor on stage 2 of Healthy Ageing Tour, as it blew the race completely apart and a group made it to the finish. Trine Schmidt was the best Team VIRTU Cycling-rider.

The completely flat stage 2 of Healthy Ageing Tour was not at all easy for the riders. A strong wind had a huge impact on the stage, as it torn a part the race and made riders finish in a lot of small groups.

Team VIRTU Cycling’s Trine Schmidt ended up in the chasing group and even though the group tried to catch the front for more than 50 kilometers the front group made it to the finish. Trine Schmidt finished 25th.

“It split like from kilometer 2. We were in the front group at that point, but then it just kept breaking apart. Mieke and Trine were together in the chasing group, but then Mieke got dropped. On days like this, it is pretty simple. If you’re not in the front, you’re not gonna make it,” sports director Carmen Small says.

“We knew it would split, but everybody knew it too. It’s pretty dissapointing. The girls are not happy about it either. There is room for improvement.”

On Friday both a normal stage and a team time trial awaits the riders, and Carmen Small looks for her riders to make a strong performance.

“We have a double day tomorrow. First a road race and then a TTT in the afternoon, we try to have one focus at a time and hope for a good result,” Carmen Small says.

It was Dutch Amy Pieters that took the stage win as well as the leaders jersey.
